ENDROTRACHEAL TUBE – PLAIN/CUFFED

An Endotracheal Tube (ETT) is a flexible tube placed into the trachea through the mouth or nose to maintain an open airway and facilitate mechanical ventilation during surgery, anesthesia, or critical care.

  • Primarily used in pediatrics (infants and young children) because the narrow pediatric trachea can seal around the tube naturally, eliminating the need for a cuff.
  • Uncuffed tubes may also be used in specific adult cases where minimal airway resistance is required, or prolonged ventilation is expected, and tracheal damage due to cuff pressure must be avoided.
  • ETTs are usually made from polyvinyl chloride ( pvc ), but can also be made up from latex rubber, silicon elastomer, or laser-resistant materials.

    DESIGN:-

  • CUFF: Most adult ETTs have a cuff near the distal end to maintain internal pressure.
  • MAGIL CURVE: A pre-formed curve that makes it easier to insert the tube.
  • CONNECTORS: Standard-Size connectors for anesthesia circuits or resuscitation bags.
  • MURPHY EYE: A hole is the beveled, distal end.
